Markers and chapters
PodEditor has two kinds of marker, and the difference decides what gets exported.
- A chapter is exported. Podcast apps that support chapters show it in a list.
- A marker is a working note, for you. It is never exported.
Add and edit
- Marker ▸ Add Chapter (⇧⌘↩︎) adds a chapter at the playhead. Add Marker (⌘↩︎) adds a marker.
- Open the Markers panel with ⇧⌘M. It lists everything in order. Double-click a name to rename it, and select a row to edit it. The filter button next to the count shows only chapters.
- Change a marker’s kind in the panel to turn a marker into a chapter or back. Settings ▸ Chapters chooses what a new marker is.
- Drag a marker on the timeline to move it.
A chapter can also have:
- A link, shown by podcast players beside the chapter. In Settings ▸ Chapters ▸ Links you can set a prefix, such as
example.com/episodes, that is typed in front of any link that is a bare word, so a show whose chapters all live under one address only needs the last part. A link with a dot or a scheme is left alone. - Artwork: click Choose… in the marker’s editor. The Episode Artwork well at the top of the panel sets the cover for the whole episode.
Move between them
Marker ▸ Previous Chapter and Next Chapter jump the playhead between chapters (⇧⌥← and ⇧⌥→). Marker ▸ Go to Numbered Marker jumps to the first ten markers. These are in the Navigate and Marker menus; Next and Previous Chapter are dimmed when the project has no chapter.
Keep chapters with the audio
If you cut or move clips after placing chapters, the chapters stay at their times and can drift away from the audio. Lock All Chapters (the lock button in the Markers panel, or Marker ▸ Lock All Chapters) attaches each chapter to the audio under it on the focused track, so later edits move the chapters with it. Locking is the last thing to do before editing further, or the first thing after placing chapters.
Export
Chapters are written into MP3 exports, as ID3 chapter frames. In the export sheet, Add Chapters is on in the built-in MP3 presets and unavailable for other formats, which cannot carry them. The sheet tells you if the project has no chapters.
To bring chapters in from a list or have an assistant suggest them, see Chapters with an AI; File ▸ Import Chapters… reads a list.
