Recording
PodEditor records one track at a time, which suits pickups, intros and ad reads. Interviews are better recorded somewhere else and imported. Recording needs the free trial or a subscription in the App Store version; see Subscription and free trial.
Record a take
- Click the R button on a track (or press ⇧R) to arm it. Only one track can be armed at a time.
- Put the playhead where the take should start.
- Press ⌘R to start. Press Space to stop.
The take is written into the project and appears on the armed track, starting at the playhead, with its waveform drawn live as you record. While Level a take when recording finishes is on in Settings ▸ Editing (it is by default), the finished take is leveled to match the rest, unless you have already adjusted it by hand.
Check your level first
Choose Monitor Input from the Track menu (or the track’s right-click menu) to watch the input meter without recording. It arms the track if nothing is armed, since monitoring needs somewhere to go. Choose Stop Monitoring Input when you are done. You cannot start monitoring while recording.
Choose an input
- Default input: Settings ▸ Audio ▸ Default input device, or Follow the System. It is used by any track that has not chosen its own.
- Per track: right-click a track and choose Input Device, then a device and either All Channels (Downmixed) or one channel. A track remembers its input even when it is not armed, so “Matt is on the interface’s channel 2” stays set.
- Output: Settings ▸ Audio ▸ Output device chooses where you hear playback. Changing it during playback restarts playback.
The microphone permission
The first time you record or monitor, macOS asks whether PodEditor may use the microphone. If you said no, PodEditor tells you so and offers Open System Settings: turn on PodEditor under Privacy & Security ▸ Microphone, then try again. PodEditor writes microphone audio only to your project on your Mac and never sends it anywhere.
If recording fails
- A Bluetooth headset as the input can fail to start. The error names the device. Choose another input, such as a wired or USB microphone, from Input Device.
- “Arm a track first” means no track has its R button on.
- Nothing is recorded and the meter is flat: check the device and channel in Input Device, and that the microphone is not muted at the device.
- Recording is blocked while an import is running. Wait for the import to finish.
